On Khruschev

Khruschev is hated for several mishaps, including with corn and apartment designs. However, he actually tried to innovate and improve the country.  He introduced corn to Russia and tried to build enough apartment blocks to give everyone a dedicated apartment.

However, when Americans explained him corn and stuff one can make out of it, they did not specify that by corn bread they mean Mexican Tortillas and not conventional loaf bread. Because of that Khruschev overcommitted all Soviet agriculture to corn and there was no wheat floor for loaf bread at all. Only when they actually made loaf bread out of corn flour, they realize the problem with it. It was getting too hard to eat too fast and people did not know what to do about it. However, at this late state they could only wait for the new season to plant wheat for bread, and it would take a year.

So, a year Khruschev introduced corn to the USSR was a year of hard bread and hard feelings. After that people called him Cornman.

Also, people complain about half-size bathtubs and other design decisions in apartments that Khruschev build. Later Brezhnev addressed all these complains in apartments build during his times. However, those build during Khruschev stayed as they were. People call them Khrushevki.

Brezhnev apartments had their own issues like poor seams between prefabricated panels and resulting cold winds and cockroaches, but these issues were less noticeable.
